A sound card is an expansion card or integrated chipset (codec) for producing sound on a computer that can be heard through speakers or headphones, or recorded using a microphone.
Most sound cards use a DAC (digital-to-analog converter) to convert digital audio signals to analog. The signal is output to the usual headphones and other acoustic devices. More advanced cards may include more than one sound chip to support high data rates and perform several simultaneous functions.
