Modern USB cables can differ from each other in various parameters, which directly affects the quality of their work. For USB cables, such parameters primarily include the material of the conductor and its cross-section: inexpensive cables are made of so-called CCAW - conductors with an aluminum core and a copper outer coating, the cross-section of which usually does not exceed 28 AWG. This method of reducing the price is justified for cables whose conductors are involved only in data transmission - the high-frequency signal spreads through the outer copper layer, which has a low resistance, thanks to the skin effect.

However, in a USB cable, two conductors are used to transmit power to the connected device, and the current can theoretically reach 500 mA (USB 2.0), and some devices, for example, external hard drives, consume up to 700-800 mA. Small-gauge copper-aluminum wire has significant resistance when running on direct current, so USB devices with high power consumption may perform erratically or not at all when connected via inexpensive cables.
