Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a secondary power source designed for power supply in the event of a short-term disconnection of the main power supply, as well as for protection against existing interference in the network while maintaining the permissible parameters of the network of the main source. As the main (primary) source, power supply from the power grid or a generator can be used.

Uninterruptible power supply differs from guaranteed power supply in that, in the case of guaranteed power supply, an interruption is allowed during the activation of the backup source. In the case of uninterrupted power supply, "instant" activation of a backup source is required. This important requirement limits the range of backup sources suitable for use in uninterruptible power supplies. In practice, usually only one such source can be used - a storage battery.

Short-term disruptions to the normal operation of the electrical network are inevitable. Short circuits are the cause of most short-term power outages. It is almost impossible to completely protect the electrical network from them, or, in any case, it would be very expensive. Short-term power outages are much more common than long-term ones.

UPS can also be used to improve the quality of the power source, keeping its characteristics within the specified limits.
